Roads and/or trails of some description exist on most woodlots in Nova Scotia. Exploring your land and ex-amining property maps, topographic maps and aerial photos can help identify their presence on your land. Trails can range from a footpath to a rough road, often called a grub road. A grub road is formed by pushing stumps and rocks to one side and is designed for travel during dry and frozen conditions. A forest access road is wider than a grub road with a smoother surface that may be graded and graveled. Ditches are usually present and there may be landings for piling wood or other products, turnouts for passing and a turnaround at the end.
